A Destination Underwater

In this episode, we meet Dr. Susann Roßbach, Red Sea Global’s Dive Safety Officer, who is leading the way in developing world-class diving experiences that balance adventure with conservation.

For Susann, diving is a lifelong passion. “My dad was a diver before I was born,” she shares. “When I was a teenager, he decided to start diving again, and we picked up the hobby together.” This early connection to the ocean led her to pursue a career in marine biology, and ultimately, to The Red Sea, where she now works on designing and managing safe, sustainable diving experiences.

With over 760,000 solar panels already powering The Red Sea destination, regenerative tourism is at the core of Red Sea Global’s mission – not just on land but beneath the water too. “What’s very special about developing an underwater destination is that we take a very holistic approach,” Susann explains. “We visit different sites, map them out, and ensure that each location is developed responsibly.”

This meticulous approach is reflected in Galaxea, Red Sea Global’s dedicated diving brand, which aims to offer diving on a different level. From adaptive dive programs to specialized experiences that cater to various skill levels, the goal is to make The Red Sea one of the world’s most accessible and inclusive diving destinations.

Two PADI Adaptive Dive Centers are already open, making The Red Sea one of the few destinations in the world to offer certified programs for divers with disabilities and the only one in Saudi Arabia. “We want to ensure that as many people as possible can experience the incredible marine life here,” says Susann.

Beyond diving, Red Sea Global is working to document and preserve underwater heritage sites. “We’ve discovered pottery shards, shipwreck remains, and other artifacts,” Susann says. “We really want to include our guests in exploring these areas.” These findings are carefully documented and shared with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture, ensuring that cultural heritage is protected for future generations.

The Red Sea’s conservation efforts also extend to marine biodiversity. With a 30% net conservation benefit goal by 2040, Red Sea Global’s programs include coral enhancement, and seagrass and mangrove restoration and expansion. “Every time we go to a different location, the diving is different, the experiences are different,” Susann reflects. “It’s a great sport where you never stop learning.”

By combining exploration with education and regeneration, Red Sea Global is creating a diving destination unlike any other – one where adventure and conservation go hand in hand.

"What makes the Saudi Arabian Red Sea very special for a diver and marine biologist is that there are many places nobody else has ever seen underwater."
