7 steps companies can take to prioritize mental wellness in the workplace
By Jamie Blower, Senior Manager - Corporate Wellness at Red Sea Global
As we mark World Mental Health Day, we are reminded that mental wellness in the workplace is no longer a luxury – it’s a necessity. As employees globally face increasing levels of stress, burnout, and uncertainty, companies must step up and make mental health a top priority.
A proactive approach to mental wellness can not only enhance employee engagement and productivity but also improve retention and overall workplace culture. Here are seven actionable steps organizations can take to ensure the mental wellbeing of their workforce:
1Offer counseling services
Providing access to professional mental health support through counseling services is crucial. Employees should have confidential, 24/7 access to psychologists or counselors who can help them navigate personal and work-related challenges. Additionally, offering online self-help tools allows employees to seek support on their own terms.
2Implement mental health days
Encourage employees to take time off specifically for their mental health. These days should be separate from regular sick leave, normalizing the idea that mental health is just as important as physical health. Mental health days give employees the opportunity to recharge and prevent burnout before it escalates.
3Promote work-life balance
Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Encourage employees to take their full breaks, limit after-hours communication, and promote flexible working hours where possible. A balanced approach helps reduce stress and creates a more sustainable working environment.
4Train wellbeing ambassadors
Designate and train employees to act as wellbeing ambassadors within the company. These individuals can promote mental wellness, organize peer support initiatives, and encourage others to participate in wellness programs. Having wellbeing advocates embedded within teams ensures a constant focus on mental health.
5Organize educational workshops
Host workshops and webinars on mental health, stress management, and emotional resilience. Invite mental health professionals to lead these sessions, offering employees practical strategies for coping with stress and improving their overall wellbeing. Make these events a regular part of your workplace culture.
6Provide physical and mental health screenings
Conduct regular health screenings to identify both physical and mental health risks. Early detection can lead to timely interventions, preventing issues from escalating. Offering these screenings shows that the company is genuinely invested in employees' holistic health.
7Create return-to-work programs
Develop programs that support employees transitioning back to work after a long absence due to illness, whether physical or mental. These programs should include phased returns, additional counseling support, and tailored accommodations to ease the employee back into their role.
